Like many millions of other office dwellers, Anne Rogers of Northampton used to spend her work days sitting at her desk for long stretches at a time. As she segued into middle age — she's 43 now — Rogers said she began putting on some extra pounds as her metabolism seemed to slow to a crawl. She'd also suffered from a soreness and aching in her lower back on and off for about 10 years, said Rogers, who is the systems manager at the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities in Northampton. And so, two months ago, she took action. Now, a visitor to Rogers' office is apt to find her, more often than not, walking slowly on her TreadDesk, a combined treadmill plus desk that she bought from TreadDesk Inc., a company based in Fishers, Ind. The desk can be raised and lowered to change the height as needed. "I've done 3.76 miles today, so far" she told a visiting reporter one recent afternoon. And the readout on her treadmill said she'd burned 477 calories.
