There are two ways to calculate your "Return On Investment" (ROI) in a TreadDesk: 1. Through reduced absenteeism. 2. Through reduced medical costs.
Absenteeism
A recent study at George Washington University estimated that $11.7 billion dollars a year is lost due to absenteeism in the workplace. The vast majority of those miss work are overweight or obese.
When an employee uses a TreadDesk at work, one of the first benefits the person realizes is weight loss due to the additional calories burned throughout the day. Over time, weight loss will lead to a healthier employee who should then have fewer sick days. In addition, walking while working has proven to increase both productivity and creativity.
To illustrate the ROI based on reduced absenteeism, we will use an employee with an annual salary of $50,000 who is responsible for bringing in revenue of at least $500 per day: 1. Salary $50,000 = $192 per day 2. Loss of revenue = $500 per day Thus, the average minimum cost per sick day = $692
Based on this analysis, an employer who bought a TreadDesk for that employee would realize the ROI with only three fewer sick days in one year. If the TreadDesk were shared by three employees, it would only take one less sick day per year for each employee to realize the same ROI. This is true because employees can realize health benefits from only two or three hours of walking per day, and these need not to be continuous hours. One employee can use the TreadDesk while another takes a rest by working at a desk or engages in some work activity.
Medical Costs
A recent study conducted by RTI Public Health Economics determined the annual medical costs for individuals based on different weight classes. They are as follows: - A normal weight person (BMI of less than 25) spends $3400 per year - An overweight person (BMI between 25 - 30) spends $4100 per year - An obese person (BMI over 30) spends $4870 per year
If an overweight person could lose enough weight to move into the normal weight category, that would save $700 per year in medical costs. If an obese person could move into the overweight category, that would save $770 per year. If the obese person could eventually move into the normal weight class, they would save $1470 per year.
Based on these numbers, and depending on which TreadDesk model is purchased, it would take two to three years to realize a ROI through medical savings costs alone. If the TreadDesk is shared by several users, the ROI would be much shorter. If you combine reduced absenteeism with medical cost savings, you see that you couls realize the ROI in just a few months.
